Hands holding fresh pinecones for scenting

How To Make Scented Pinecones: A Step-by-Step Guide

Scented pinecones are a delightful addition to your home decor, particularly during the fall and winter holidays. Their rustic charm and natural allure infuse any space with a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for those who embrace the cozy concept of Hygge.

Why DIY?

While you can find scented pinecones at major retailers, creating your own is a cost-effective way to bring nature and fragrance into your home. Pinecones are readily available in nature, and essential and fragrance oils, known for their longevity, are both affordable and completely customizable to your personal fragrance preferences.

Materials Needed:

  • Pinecones (gathered from nature or purchased)
  • Essential or fragrance oils (cinnamon, vanilla, citrus, peppermint, and pine make an incredible seasonal blend)
  • High-proof alcohol (rubbing alcohol or vodka to act as an emulsifier)
  • Water (distilled is preferred)
  • Glass spray bottle
  • Sealable plastic Ziploc bags or airtight containers
  • Baking sheet and parchment paper
  • Optional: decorative elements like holiday ribbon or eco-friendly glitter

Preparing Your Pinecones:

  1. Clean: Brush off visible dirt, dust, and debris from fallen pinecones.
  2. Disinfect: Soak them in a mixture of warm water and a cup of white vinegar for 30 minutes to clean them thoroughly.
  3. Air Dry: Lay them out on a strainer or paper towels for 1 to 3 hours.
  4. Bake: Bake at 250°F to 275°F on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 1 to 2 hours, turning them halfway through. This melts away sticky sap, kills hidden bugs, opens up the pinecone scales, and leaves them perfectly prepped for crafting.

Applying the Essential Oils

Because pure essential oils and water naturally separate, you need a binding agent to ensure your holiday scent applies evenly and lasts for weeks.

First, pour 2 tablespoons of high-proof alcohol (like isopropyl rubbing alcohol or vodka) directly into your glass spray bottle.

Add 20 to 30 drops of your chosen essential or fragrance oils—a mix of woodsy pine, sweet vanilla, bright citrus, punchy peppermint, and warm cinnamon works beautifully.

Swirl the bottle gently to dissolve the oils into the alcohol. Finally, add 2 tablespoons of water and shake well.

Generously spray your baked pinecones with the mixture, then immediately seal them inside a gallon-size zip-top bag. Let them sit sealed for at least 24 to 48 hours. This locks in the moisture and allows the seasonal fragrance to deeply infuse into the wood.

Note: Always use glass spray bottles for this step, as concentrated essential oils can degrade and leach plastic over time.

Decorate Your Space:

Once your pinecones are fully infused, they are ready to bring holiday cheer to your home:
  • Greenery: Incorporate them into holiday wreaths, mantel displays, or festive baskets.
  • Centerpieces: Place them in a wooden dough bowl alongside wooden beads or rustic jingle bells for a gorgeous tablescape.
  • Gift Wrapping: Tie them onto holiday presents with twine for a beautiful, fragrant topper.
  • The Tree: Attach a small loop of ribbon to the base and hang them as natural holiday ornaments.
