March Madness. Winter Dry Skin!

Crocus Breaking Through Snow - Island Thyme Soap Company

March Madness is about more than the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

It's about finally being able to leave those winter months that bring a chronic feeling of winter dry skin behind! Seeing that first crocus bud breaking through the snow is a symbol of new beginnings!

That means new beginnings in your skincare routine too!

Indoor heat sources, whether its wood, oil or electricity all eliminate moisture in the air, the humidity. As the air becomes drier, it tries to pull moisture from the nearest source. Unless you are running a humidifier, that nearest source might be you skin, especially your face, hands, and feet leading to that chronic feeling of dry skin.

But spring is coming! So tun off the heat and throw open those windows!

Your moisturizing routine should change with the weather. In winter, applying a moisturizer that's oil-based, like a whipped body butter creates a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. It seals water in the skin and preserves moisture when the humidity is low. Island Thyme Soap Company Body Butter contains a whopping 30% Shea for in intense and lasting hydration! We’ve also folded in a layer of Virgin Cocoa and Mango Butters with a mixture of Organic Hemp Seed, Grapeseed and Coconut Oils!

As we transition to spring, of course the first thing we recommend is cleansing your skin with a gentle, natural, luxurious soap that's free of harsh detergents or chemicals that strip your skins natural protection.

Then a gentle but effective exfoliating scrub followed by a water based moisturizing lotion will slough off those months of winter skin. Just scoop out a handful of your exfoliating scrub and rub it between your palms, then scrub in circles onto damp skin over your entire body.

Sugar makes a great exfoliating scrub. Sugar has humectant properties, which means that it draws moisture in from the environment into the skin. Island Thyme Soap Company's Demerara Sugar is MINERALIZED Brown Sugar. No plain old brown sugar (refined white sugar from GMO beets bathed in a bit of molasses for us. Our organic sugar scrub features the large-grained, somewhat crunchy Demerara raw sugar with origins in Guyana (a colony formerly called Demerara.

Follow your scrub with a tall drink of water and then some! Our amazing Omega Hemp Seed Lotion contains the fatty acids of Omega 3 and Omega 6 (Gamma-Linolenic acid). When used on the skin, they can help bolster your skin's suppleness by protecting and nourishing your skin's layers.

And of course as always, when outdoors continue to use your moisturizing, broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to any exposed areas.

Oh Honey! The Benefits Of Raw Honey In Skin Care Are Significant

October 09, 2018

Raw honey and skin care is a match made in heaven

Honey isn’t just for sweetening toast and tea. Honey is one of nature’s true MVPs. Historically, honey has been used to suppress coughs, treat burns, diaper rash, psoriasis, dress wounds and make your face glow!  Medicinal honey can moisturize wounds, stimulate tissue growth, collagen synthesis, and blood vessel formation, inhibit microbial infections, and soothe tissue inflammation.

If you're not impressed by the power on honey by now, we'll add one more property in honor of the month of October and Halloween. Creole women in Lousiana use honey to treat skin ailments AND in potions to ward off ghosts.

Skin care and paranormal prevention. Now that’s some serious double duty.

September Means Changes To Your Skin Care Routine

September 04, 2018

Unless you are blessed like us to live in an environment where it's eternally summer, September means it's time to trade those flip flops and tank tops for jeans and a sweater.

Skin Care Routines Must Change With The Seasons

The skin is the barrier between the internal and external world and as much as they may wish summer wouldn't end so soon, for most people reading this, it’s just not summertime anymore. September also means it's time to transition away from summer skincare routines. Temperatures may vary greatly from one day to the next, It can be hot, humid during the day and cooler and dryer at night. The water in the air affects the balance of water (hydration) in the skin. A humid climate can soften skin and make it easy to maintain fullness, but a dryer climate can dehydrate the skin, making more likely to show fine lines and wrinkles.
